Why Drew McIntyre vs. Randy Orton At SummerSlam Should Get Your Attention

The card for this year's SummerSlam seems uninspired and not enjoyable. Maybe it's the pandemic or the fact that both Raw and Smackdown on Fox have underachieved to the point where fans are fed up. This SummerSlam doesn't feel as if it is the second-biggest show for the company. Or maybe it's third behind the Royal Rumble. Anyway, despite the move out of the PC and into the roomier Amway Center, this still seems underwhelming. There is one match that should be the best match in the event.

If you ask me off the top of my head, the two wrestlers who are carrying the Raw brand are Drew McIntyre and Randy Orton. It's fitting that both would be featured in the WWE Championship match at SummerSlam. McIntyre has been everything as advertised while the champion. He has had great title defenses during this run with the likes of Seth Rollins, Bobby Lashley and Dolph Ziggler. His promo and wrestling skills have improved dramatically as the champion. As the dominating face, McIntyre looks legitimate and fans have given him rave reviews, so you can't really blame the man for the poor ratings of Monday Night Raw.

The same goes for Randy Orton. Before the pandemic, Orton reverted back to his old sadistic ways by attacking Edge after the Royal Rumble. Despite his two matches with Edge being scrutinized by critics alike, Orton has been the best heel in the company. You can tell he continues to keep his body in great shape as his abilities in the ring are crisp still. His promos during this run showed he can still be sadistic after all these years. His segment with Ric Flair on Monday was emotional and mainly used to elevate Orton. It is also my vote for Segment of the Year.

Here is where WWE needs to take advantage of this encounter. Clearly, this card is not going to make me jump out of my seat. There will be matches that would steal the show, but for now, this is your meal ticket. Put it in the main event and have.....are you ready?....a wrestling match. That's right. No gimmicks. Let these two do what they do best: wrestle. Give them the time to develop during this bout. If Orton wins the title, I'm fine with that. If McIntyre retains, I'm also fine with that. Just give me a story to follow during this match.

See.......but while reading this, you're saying to yourself, "Even if they do this, will it change the fact that Monday Night Raw is still terrible?" It probably won't, but could be a positive start for a program that needs a jolt.

Or it will be more of the same?
