Welcome Back, March Madness!

One year ago, the sports world was turned upside down when COVID-19 entered the country and a certain center from an NBA team decided to touch everything on a press table. Then, sports stopped entirely due to the pandemic. The first causality in that was March Madness or the 68-team college basketball tournament that crowns a national championship. It was a risk since March Madness was a money-making machine for the business known as the NCAA. And yes, it's a business. The idea of fans being absent wasn't to their liking.

Now in 2021, with improvements controlling the pandemic, sort of, the tournament is here and most are excited. I am also excited since the tournament was another piece of a sports fix which is perfect in the month it takes place. Around this time, we are deep into Spring Training, WrestleMania is around the corner, the NBA and the NHL is winding down and the NFL is beginning its off-season. March Madness is a non-stop basketball barrage for weeks on end. In 2011, they made the decision to put March Madness on four different stations instead of the one major station that it aired on. At first, I didn't like it. Ten years ago, I was a cynical person. Now, imagine watching one game on the television, one on the tablet, another on the phone and one on the laptop. It's a lot of multitasking, but it works. Also, going to an establishment......ok, I'll stop calling it that...going to a sports bar and viewing the games all at once, enjoying appetizers and a cold beer. As much as the play-in games are deemed meaningless to a lot of fans, it gives an excuse to drink at a bar on a Tuesday. So, the four stations airing the games is a success. I should find a time machine to go back to 2011 and slap my 31-year old self.

I admit this as many people have, too, I don't watch any regular season games. Ok, maybe a couple, but not as religiously as I can. The one thing everyone can agree on is the tournament is the most exciting few weeks that fans can enjoy. The NCAA does a good job at matching up teams to get the fans invested in the tourney.

March Madness is a fix for sports fans to be cherished. There are a lot of upsets and dominating matchups, but the NCAA tournament is a change of pace and myself, I'm happy that it is back!

Nice!
