BREAKING NEWS: ROBERT SALEH AND THE NEW YORK JETS PART WAYS

Geez, the prophecy has spoken. The announcement of the FIRING of Robert Saleh as Jets head coach wasn't a surprise. It's a New York Jets thing.

Okay, okay, I will elaborate more on this, the New York Jets are in a familiar situation that they seem to be in every season. One of a lot of hype but becoming one of a letdown. They are 2-3 and fading fast down the standings. The hype coming in this season was of playoffs and hopefully, a chance to raise the Lombardi Trophy. Well, the J-E-T-S have looked lost and unfocused during the first five games this season. Breece Hall seems tentative, Garrett Wilson should be one of the best receivers in the game (8.8 yards per catch) and Sauce Gardner has seem to regress so far. Obviously, this is why Saleh was shown the door. But he wasn't the only one.......

THE FRANCHISE SUCKS THE LIFE OUT OF A COACHING CAREER

With the exception of Tuna and the first few years of Rex Ryan, becoming the head coach of the New York Jets has become a graveyard for their careers. From 1990, here are the winning percentages for Jets head coaches:

Bruce Coslet (1990-1993) .406

Pete Carroll (1994) .375

Rich Kotite (1995-1996) .125

Bill Parcells (1997-1999) .604 SUCCESS!

Al Groh (2000) .563

Herman Edwards (2001-2005) .488

Eric Mangini (2006-2008) .479

Rex Ryan (2009-2014) .479

Todd Bowles (2015-2018) .375

Adam Gase (2019-2020) .281

Robert Saleh (2021-2024) .357

Even after Ryan led the Jets to the AFC Championship game in his first two seasons, his coaching career took a nosedive even after escaping the Jets and landing in Buffalo. Also, I notice two things on this list. There are only a couple of coaches (Parcells and Groh) that finished their Jets head coaching career over .500. If you are keeping score, that is two in the last 34 years. It's an amazing stat to fathom. Another thing I noticed is that only one coach has lasted more than five seasons with the club, that being Ryan. Also, two coaches only lasted one season. Groh finished 9-7 in 2000 only to be replaced by Mr. Play To Win the Game himself, Herm Edwards. Carroll went 6-10 in his lone season in 1994 only to be replaced by god-awful Rich Kotite. Pete Carroll would go on and win a National Championship with USC and a Super Bowl as the Seahawks head coach. This move tells you everything you need to know.

I won't pile on GM and Steve Keim clone, Joe Douglas. Despite the drama surrounding Haason Reddick, Douglas has actually done an adequate job finding talent to help the Jets succeed. Sure, he has some mishaps with drafting Zach Wilson and Will Macdonald IV looks like a bust, the selections of Hall, Wilson, Jermaine Johnson and Sauce Gardner have Jets fans thinking of a bright future. Hopefully, they can bounce back.

So, here's the big question, is this Aaron Rodgers' fault? Yes and no. No, because Rodgers suffered an Achilles injury four plays into the 2023 season. The Jets went toe-and-nail to acquire the services of the future Hall-of-Famer, hoping he can turn their fortunes around. Yes, because the Jets catered to him to no avail. It was clear that Rodgers did not want Saleh around. That sideline incident from Thursday Night Football said a lot.

Owner Woody Johnson said he made the decision to cut bait and "part ways" with Saleh. He also added that Aaron Rodgers had no input in the ouster. Then, there was a rumor from some pundits that Saleh was going to fire OC Nathaniel Hackett and Rodgers called Woody to tell him to let Saleh go. There is also the report that Saleh was led out by security without talking to coaches and players.....seriously, what the hell? If any of this is true, then why is any candidate would want to be the head coach of the team if they are going to be treated like that?

The Jets are gunning for a head coach who can relate to Aaron Rodgers and lift the Jets' spirits. Maybe a 72-year-old, six-time Super Bowl champion who spurned the franchise 24 years ago? It could happen. But judging by the past history of head coaches for the franchise, this would be a gamble.

It's a New York Jets thing.
