I probably should just say that I knew this was going to happen. I mean, c'mon! After seven years of finding himself or doing other ventures in his life, Phil Brooks decided to come back to what made him famous: Professional Wrestling. On August 20, 2021, Phil Brooks (aka CM Punk) made his return to professional wrestling on AEW Rampage. Everyone was in jubilation as Living Colour's "Cult Of Personality" rang out in the United Center. Everyone was excited. I WAS EXCITED! (Mark out moment) CM Punk was making it clear that he was a different man. He was making news.
One year later, CM Punk is making news again. Not jubilation, but of him being exiled from wrestling.
In high school, we had yearbooks in which our friends tell us "Never change". In hindsight, we have to change. In life, you have to mature. It happens. There are times when you just need to not say the wrong thing. CM Punk didn't get that memo like I did. Somewhat?! According to many sources, Punk was being.......CM Punk. He won the AEW Championship over Hangman Page in a classic match at Double Or Nothing. He was on top of the wrestling world since WWE wasn't doing anything great.
Then, he got hurt. Okay, no problem. AEW would find a way to get Punk back into the title picture. However, during a promo on AEW Dymanite since his return from injury, he decided to bury Hangman Page. Only one tiny problem, his cheap shots against Page were not in the script. He went over the company and went to business for himself. Many around the organization were upset and thought Punk had caused a division of the locker room with his antics. The title unification match with Jon Moxley was seemed as a token gesture. Punk loses in a squash. He would get his rematch against Moxley at All Out. In a bloodied, brutal affair, CM Punk wins the title again and this should be smooth sailing from now on.
Then came the now-infamous media scrum. Oh, boy, this was an absolute doozie.
Punk basically berated a reporter for asking a question about Colt Cabana. Apparently, it wasn't water under the bridge for him. He went on to call out the EVP's (The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega) and their lack of leadership. He does have a point there. Tony Khan should have stopped this from escalating since he was sitting next to Punk, but looked bewildered. This fiasco left what was positive in CM Punk's tenure in AEW all but burning in flames. The aftermath was reported that the EVP's confronted Punk and Ace Steel and it caused a melee, which people were bit and hair was pulled. The repercussions of this was the Elite was stripped of their Trios Championship and suspended. Punk was stripped of his AEW Championship and probably, his career in All Elite Wrestling finished.
All I have to say is......What is the matter with you, Phil? You were given everything but the world from Tony Khan. He made sure you were the world champion and was willing to pay you the money that you wanted. Why are you so angry? I realize that certain performers are annoying and deserve a tongue lashing. However, it's better to not say anything at all. The goodwill of his return has been washed away, completely.
It sucks because I'm a CM Punk fan. Hell, my first blog on RSMAZ was on his 434 day WWE Championship reign. I wanted this comeback to have a happy ending. Oh, well.
Some of us will never grow up.
