The 2020 NFL season is going to be weird, that's for sure. With the pandemic leaving franchises without fans in attendance and players opting out for the season, this could be unpredictable.
BUFFALO BILLS
The Bills have the momentum heading into the season. Don't let the 16-0 blown lead in the Wild Card game fool you, this team has a foundation that coach Sean McDermott built. Buffalo decided to go all-in acquiring Stefon Diggs from Minnesota to add another weapon to help QB Josh Allen's development. The defense is the rock of this team and having CB Tre'Davious White not opt out was a blessing. If the Bills make the AFC Championship game, don't be surprised.
MIAMI DOLPHINS
Give head coach Brian Flores credit. He knew his team was bad, but he wanted his squad to play hard and not tank. The Dolphins were able to get a high pick and get the prospect they wanted in Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa. The free agency haul on defense (Kyle Van Noy, Shaq Lawson and Byron Jones) could benefit right away. The question is that if Tua's hip is going to last a long NFL career.
NEW YORK JETS
The Jets are in the hamster's wheel. They improved towards the end of the year, but did that carry over to this season? Sam Darnold needs to be saved. Entering his third season, Darnold looks lost or overwhelmed. Adding Mekhi Becton in the draft to protect him could help. Trading disgruntled S Jamal Adams to Seattle for a king's ransom of picks could help the Jets in the future. Until then, New York is stuck in the hamster's wheel.
NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
You can hear 31 NFL franchises breathe a sigh of relief. But.......despite Tom Brady deciding to take his talents to Tampa, don't count out the Patriots. Their defense is still tough with reigning Defensive Player of the Year CB Stephon Gilmore leading the way. New QB Cam Newton has something to prove and is in the right situation for a comeback season. The Patriots could be a playoff team, which sucks for 31 franchises.
BALTIMORE RAVENS
The Ravens ran rampant through the league in 2019 with 14 wins and a first seed in the AFC playoffs. Lamar Jackson baffled defenders en route to the MVP award. Things were looking up for Baltimore......until they were stymied by Tennessee in the Divisional round. Expect the same vibe and energy from the Ravens. Unfortunately, they released Earl Thomas. Don't think it will hurt them though.
CINCINNATI BENGALS
The Bengals were.....well the Bengals. Finishing 2-14 and securing the #1 pick, Cincinnati knew it was time to start over, bidding Andy Dalton farewell and using the first pick on LSU quarterback and Ohio native Joe Burrow. There is still a lot of work to do before the Bengals become a force in the AFC. A whole lot of work.
CLEVELAND BROWNS
This year, the hype train isn't running on the tracks. The Browns were quiet, yet effective during the off-season through free-agency and the draft. The key is if QB Baker Mayfield and WR Odell Beckman Jr. can bounce back from subpar campaigns in 2019. Locking up DE Myles Garrett to an extension was huge and Cleveland can breakthrough this season.......or.......
PITTSBURGH STEELERS
The Steelers missed the playoffs for the second straight season, but added a big-play player in the secondary named Minkah Fitzpatrick. The question is if Big Ben can return and stay effective for the Steelers' offense. The young players on offense hopefully can develop.....for Big Ben's sake.
HOUSTON TEXANS
24-0. This was the lead against the Chiefs in the Divisional playoff game, then coach Bill O'Brien decided to make questionable play calls that backfired and let KC in the contest to eventually get destroyed by them. Things proceeded to get more awkward when O'Brien traded DeAndre Hopkins for David Johnson and magic beans. DeShaun Watson gets extended and the Texans are hoping the acquisitions by O'Brien pay off.
INDIANAPOLIS COLTS
The Colts are the team that is in a comfortable situation. GM Chris Ballard has added young talent through the draft and made smart acquisitions through free-agency and trades. Signing QB Philip Rivers and trading for DL DeForest Buckner makes Indy a playoff contender.
JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS
Two years ago, Jacksonville was a game away from the Super Bowl. Now, back to square one. Gone this off-season are A.J. Bouye, Calais Campbell, Nick Foles, Leonard Fournette and Yannick Ngakoue. Yep, the tanks are a-coming. Hopefully, they can surround Trevor Lawrence or Justin Fields with young, superior talent.
TENNESSEE TITANS
The Titans made it to the AFC Championship game last season and I believe this team is not a one season wonder. Extending Ryan Tannehill and Derrick Henry gives the offense a boost. Signing Vic Beasley and Jadeveon Clowney does the same on defense. Tennessee is a playoff team. Yes, really.
DENVER BRONCOS
The Broncos this season has potential and upside. Had to throw in the cliches. The offense has firepower....if they develop. Drew Lock, Melvin Gordon, Philip Lindsey, Courtland Sutton, first round pick Jerry Jeudy and Noah Fant could become lethal in a few years. The defense added A.J. Bouye for veteran leadership. Denver could surprise everyone in a tough AFC West.
KANSAS CITY CHIEFS
After decades of torture and malaise, the Chiefs win the ultimate prize: THE SUPER BOWL! The organization decided to give extensions to head coach Andy Reid, GM Brett Veach, TE Travis Kelce, DL Chris Jones and QB Patrick Mahomes at the tone of 10 years and (spits out water) $503 MILLION! K.C. is the favorite going into the season.
LAS VEGAS RAIDERS
After years of uncertainty, the Raiders have a permanent home in Vegas at Allegiant Stadium.....with no fans this season. The Raiders have made strides after the Khalil Mack trade and Josh Jacobs provided offensive firepower last season. The question is Derek Carr's future after this season.
LOS ANGELES CHARGERS
The Philip Rivers era is over. By drafting Justin Herbert, the Chargers start over in that position. Their offense is still explosive and extending Keenan Allen helps. The defense can breathe a sigh of relief with Joey Bosa's extension. Losing Derwin James hurts, but L.A. could surprise.
