In 2016 on an episode of Monday Night Raw from Detroit, Michigan, Stephanie McMahon was receiving an award for something and then suddenly, the "Here Comes The Money" theme comes on and Shane McMahon appears to a roaring pop. The WWE "Universe" gave Shane the proper ovation as the right to the throne to Vince's chair. He wanted to control of Monday Night Raw, but his dad said you can have it in a match at WrestleMania 32 or as I like to call it "Bizarro WrestleMania" since top talent was injured during this time. Against the Undertaker inside Hell In A Cell, it was one of the best matches of the night. Shane had one of the moments of the night when he lept off the top of the cell and crashed onto the announcer's table. Desplte losing, Shane gained a lot of respect after being gone for so long and the wrestling community was happy to have him back.
Three years later, the novelty and jubilantion has gone away.
I mean, Shane is still a draw and every WrestleMania, he gets his spotlight match. Here's the problem: Shane is a part-timer who is now inserted into a full-time role, which doesn't suit him. It also keeps more prominent and capable preformers from progressing in their careers. The thought of Shane being champion could have the same effect as when Jinder Mahal winning the title two years ago. The company doesn't want to go back to that.
Kofi's WWE championship reign has been somewhat profitable. But we all knew that the title reign would resemble Eddie Guerrero's reign in 2004 or Rey Mysterio's in 2006. It would be memorable, but it was a restricted reign. (Unnecessary plug: And if you want to read about Kofi's odyssey to the title, read my blog about it.) A wrestler with an established track record should be the performer that can unseat Kofi. Shane McMahon is NOT that.
Look, this all started with that World Cup- like tournament on the atrocity known as Crown Jewel. It was supposed to be Dolph Ziggler vs. The Miz in the final. The Miz injured his knee or ankle and Shane decided to take the Miz's place and he defeated Ziggler to win the tournament. Ok.......let's break this down. Shane strolled into a tournament that was poorly executed to say the least and beat a full- time talented wrestler in under 3 minutes to win a faux World Cup. And this is the part where you will say "Are you kidding me, WWE?" He and the company would every week proclaim him "The Best In The World." Remember years ago when an ex- employee proclaimed himself that? He has tattoos, is from Chicago, and is straightedge. Don't think WWE holds grudges, huh?
So, Shane McMahon is an act who can draw for a pay-per-view or two and can be a valuable on-screen character for the company. Right now, you have him full- time and he is a novelty act. But essentially in time, the novelty is bond to wear off.
