On Tuesday, the NBA held its draft lottery in Chicago for many teams looking to be that franchise to select the most ballyhooed prospect in recent history: Duke forward Zion Williamson. If you saw the event, people were very excited and a lot of people were up-in-arms about the team who won the lottery and the new system when it comes to the lottery. All I can say is: YOU WERE FOREWARNED!
Ever since he became NBA Commissioner in early 2014, Adam Silver's main vocal point, his platform if you will, is to abolish tanking in the league. His mission is to change certain situations to make the NBA more competitive. (Ex. Having the All-Star Game to a fantasy draft type format) This year's draft lottery was created to
equal out the odds for the teams in the lottery......sort of.
Silver said this way before this lottery would conmence. So you were forewarned!
CLEVELAND CAVALIERS- This team actually thought Kevin Love was the face of the franchise. And they won't be getting help from free agents due to the Cavs' being buried in the luxury tax. They have the fifth pick, so this could actually help in their favor. Problem is that they would have love that higher pick.
PHOENIX SUNS- I don't think this team was tanking. They are that bad. The front office is an absolute mess. the coach was let go after one season, obviously using the Cardinals' blueprint to hiring coaches: inexperienced and way in over their heads. The sixth pick is not what they wanted, but if they can develop this pick, it could help them.......if.
NEW YORK KNICKS- Where do I start.....Ok....Don't tell me that this team was trying to be competitive. The Porzingis trade was evidence of that. The team is somewhat delusional thinking that by doing this, the #1 pick was theirs. They got the third pick.....and everyone associated with the Knicks was upset. This could be a good pick, if the team has coinfidence for their scouting and front office departments.....that's funny.
LOS ANGELES LAKERS- So you mean to tell me that the team that has been shoved down our throats by every sports media outlet known to man during the off-season despite NOT MAKING THE PLAYOFFS, airing out their dirty laundry of buffoonery in the front office with fans protesting about that......and they get the fourth pick. Clearly, this team really won the lottery despite not getting the top pick.
MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES- This team has finally realized that it's time to start over. The trade to send Marc Gasol to Toronto was the writing on the wall. Mike Conley will be next now that the Griz have the second pick and intend on drafting Ja Morant. I like this team back in the Grit n Grind days and hopefully, they can be successful again.
NEW ORLEANS PELICANS- The team that won the lottery will definitely take Zion and hopefully, convince AD to stay. New GM David Griffin and coach Alvin Gentry are doing backflips as they have the building block to combine with AD, or trade AD and get young players back to build the team around Zion. The Pelicans have the ball in their court in this draft......Sorry, that was the first thing that came to my head.
So Adam Silver should be glad that this draft was a so-called building block to his movement to killing tanking in his league.......despite the fact that there are "superteams" and they have a franchise who has won 3 of the last 4 NBA titles. But I'm just saying.
