WrestleMania 31 was held at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, CA on March 29, 2015. It was super sunny that day and it showed when the ring blinded you due to the sunlight, because Levi's Stadium is very open. The event was a spectacle of epic proportions, generating $12 million of revenue. The matches were very competitive for the first half of the show with that blazing sun shining on them.
FATAL FOUR WAY TAG TEAM MATCH: KIDD/CESARO VS. LOS MATADORES VS. THE USOS VS. THE NEW DAY
Very competitive match between teams that were trying to elevate the tag team division to another level. Kidd and Cesaro getting the victory was good for them, unfortunately Tyson Kidd's career was cut short due to injuries and Cesaro would continue with Sheamus in a top tag team as The Bar.
ANDRE THE GIANT MEMORIAL BATTLE ROYAL
This was very uninspiring, until Damien Mizdow turned on the Miz. The Big Show was victorious in this.
LADDER MATCH FOR THE INTERCONTINENTAL TABLE
After many years of nothingness, the WWE finally decided to focus on the IC title in WrestleMania. The highlight was Luke Harper throwing Dean Ambrose onto a ladder outside, causing the ladder to break in half. The ending was Daniel Bryan and Dolph Ziggler near the top of the ladder with Ziggler falling off after repeated headbutts as Bryan becomes Intercontinental Champion. One year after he won the WWE Championship, Bryan once again had another WrestleMania moment.
RANDY ORTON VS. SETH ROLLINS
For the second straight blog, I am going to put over Randy Orton for.....putting over an up-and coming talent.
Very organized match. The ending is insane as Rollins tries to hit the Curb Stomp on Orton. As Rollins put his foot on Orton's head, Orton lifts his head which propels Rollins in the air. While in the air, Orton adjusts and catches Rollins with the RKO. It was a gutsy, but a beautiful manuever to get Orton the win.
TRIPLE H VS. STING
A classic between two supposedly over-the-hill performers. Nostaglia hits when the NWO and DX come to the ring. The crowd chanting "You still got it!" for Sting was a very cool moment. Triple H takes the victory, which for me was a message that this was the final nail in the coffin of WCW. Sting should have got the win here since fans have been waiting for him to come to WWE for many years, but the WWE seems to remind us that they killed WCW. We get it.
I will throw in the segment with Triple H, Stephanie McMahon, The Rock and Ronda Rousey in this despite the fact it happened later on in the show. It seemed forced.
A.J. LEE/PAIGE VS. THE BELLA TWINS
If only A.J. Lee and Paige can be competing today, they would thrive in the women's revolution. Okay match, nothing special with Lee and Paige getting the victory.
US CHAMPIONSHIP: RUSEV VS. JOHN CENA/UNDERTAKER VS. BRAY WYATT
I put these two together, because they are similar due to circumstances. Rusev and Wyatt were up and coming superstars that could use victories at this WrestleMania to springboard their careers. Unfortunately, Cena and Taker got meaningless victories. Cena was about to begin his part timer role and Taker looked beat up and broke down. And as we see now, Rusev and Wyatt's careers have not taken off as many hoped. Also the Taker/Wyatt match deserved better.
WWE CHAM...SORRY, WWE WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP: BROCK LESNAR VS. ROMAN REIGNS
At last year's WrestleMania, Michael Cole stated that this match was a classic. I watched this match over, and it's not the classic that they say. I get the idea of Reigns being the underdog against the bully Lesnar, but this just didn't click. This match gave birth to the phrase "Suplex City". Brock was bloddied outside of the ring and after a mini comeback by Reigns, Lesnar laid Reigns with a fourth F5 as both men fell to the ground. This is where WWE decided to pull the plug. Seth Rollins runs out and cashes in his Money In The Bank contract. He hits Lesnar with a Curb Stomp and does the same with Reigns. He hits Reigns again with the Curb Stomp and pinned him to win the championship. Rollins' reaction when he won is hilarious.
There you have it. WrestleMania 31 was a pay-per view that was good, but had some bumps in the road. The two rising superstars and the one legend that should have won, the women's match being too short, and the forced segment. The ascent of Seth Rollins that night is curious to see, considering now in 2019, he is one of the best performers in the company. It's a WrestleMania that you watch again and think "Huh....this wasn't bad after all".
