Hang Time was a show on the NBC network, which during that time when Saved By The Bell was THE show on Saturday mornings where targeted for teens. By the way, California Dreams was OK, but let's face it, it was no Saved By The Bell. Hang Time's plot surrounded a female player who was better than her male teammates, so she is promoted to the varsity team and is the best player on this team. It is also noted that a lot of these players weren't actually five star prospects. Hell, there weren't even have two star prospects. But that's coming from someone who sees these five star prospect's mix tape videos online and this is a fictional show. Also the team captain and snooty head cheerleader are skeptical of the team having a female as their best player. It seems like every show based in high school has to have a snooty cheerleader in it, much like Cordelia on the show Buffy The Vampire Slayer or a jock who is a complete jerk.
Anyways, the leader of this team is Coach Bill Fuller, played by former NBA player Reggie Theus. He gives his team important advice about how to succeed in basketball and life, teamwork is vital and it doesn't matter who is on your team, you work together to reach a common goal. These are actually good words of advice, especially for a teen who wants to be in an organized sport. Theus actually would go on to have an actual coaching career from 2002-2018. Theus was replaced by Dick Butkus in later seasons, which was weird considering Butkus is a football guy. Let's be honest, who is going to tell Dick Butkus he shouldn't be on this show. Two actors you probably recognize in this are Anthony Anderson and Jay Hernandez. Anderson is world famous and considered one of the funniest guys in Hollywood. He is currently on the show Black-ish on ABC. Hernandez is now Magnum P.I. on the CBS reboot.
I think the show was good, because of the message that is sent about teamwork and the fact that it doesn't matter whoever is on your team, male or female, you do things together to make the team successful. This show started around the time where the NBA was booming, because of the return of Michael Jordan and NCAA Basketball was enjoying a fruitful audience. It wasn't the best show on the Saturday Morning slate, but it was relatable to me due to the basketball element. For the kids of this generation, if you want a lesson on how be a good teammate, this is worth a look.
(Writer's Note: Saved By The Bell: The New Class was around this time. THAT WAS TERRIBLE. And as of 2018, Reggie Theus' head coaching tenure at Cal State Northridge didn't end on the best of terms.)
