Are The Sacramento Kings Ever Going To Get Out Of Their Decade Long Slump?

Updated: Aug 23, 2023

(Editor's Note: While typing this, I was listening to the song "Stumblin In" by Suzi Quatro and Chris Norman. Very underrated track.)

Oh, boy, I had to write something about this sooner or later. The Sacramento Kings have been in a "daze" for the past decade. You can't really pinpoint one thing that has caused this. It's more like a truckload of things that caused this "daze" if you will. Bad draft picks, horrible trades, overpaying free agents, awful coaching hires etc. You get the idea. Let it be known that the ownership also had their hand in this "daze". The Maloofs and now current owner Vivek Ranadive are regarded as meddlesome, because of their hands on approach to the basketball side of the franchise. Remember the Maloofs traded for Jimmer Fredette just to sell tickets? Vivek did prevent the Kings from moving to Seattle, so he got that going for him. Other than that, not much else. The GM position has been an odyssey during this time also. Geoff Petrie was the architect behind "The Greatest Show On Court" as SI dubbed them in the early 2000's. Petrie would be the GM for the Kings for almost two decades, until the new ownership came in and hired Pete D'Alessandro as GM. That tenure didn't even last two years. And now with Vlade Divac at the helm, there is some promise for the future. I know that I give the man grief, but there are times when he makes smart decisions. Unfortunately, there are times he makes boneheaded decisions. I know I said earlier that I wasn't going to pinpoint one thing, but the Garrett Temple/Ben McLemore trade was one of those boneheaded decisions. I'm not even going to get into the coaching carousel during this time, because that is complicated enough.

So, with that being said, can the Sacramento Kings break out of their slump? Yes. Is it going to be easy? Oh, hell no. But they do have some building blocks for the future that can make them successful. Let's start with the obvious.

GOLDEN 1 CENTER

Experts have hailed the Golden 1 Center as a technological wonderland and after watching a couple of games on TV, I actually would want to see a live game there. From what I heard, the arena is actually easier to get to as it is in the middle of Sacramento, unlike Arco Arena which was at the outskirts of the city.

THE FAN BASE

It is rare that a legion of fans will still show up to the games even when the team is bad. The Kings have the luxury of a supportive fan base that will stand by the team through thick and thin. I saw images of the final home game at Arco Arena and many fans had tears in their eyes showing their dedication to the team.

VIVEK RANADIVE

The man is a champion for saving the franchise from moving and has done a lot for the community. I think Vivek can be a great owner of this franchise if he sticks with the business side of the aspect instead of the basketball side. Peter Holt was the owner of the San Antonio Spurs during all of their championship runs. It worked because Holt was the owner and the basketball people made the decisions. It could happen here.

VLADE DIVAC

Let's be honest, Vlade's tenure as GM has been up and down. Can he improve at the position? Oh, no doubt he can. The question is can it happen quickly? We can only pray. Divac does have a knack of getting unpolished players through the draft like Skal Labissierre and Harry Giles. That strategy could be beneficial for the future especially with Giles showing promise. Unfortunately, he also has the knack of overpaying for European big men. If he can cut down on that and get players that improve the team and fit the system, he will be fine.

DAVID JOERGER

Joerger isn't the big-name coach like Gregg Popovich or Steve Kerr, because of circumstances. His tenure in Memphis was shortened unexpectedly which tells you all you need to know there. Joerger has some talented players and his playbook is equipped to help develop these players, but as the saying goes "He has too many steaks that are not seasoned yet". It will be interesting to see how Joerger uses MBIII in this offense.

DEAARON FOX/MARVIN BAGLEY III

The Kings have made Fox the face of the franchise, which is a good move considering he has a boatload of potential and is showing poise off the court. If he can improve in his game throughout the next few years, Fox looks like an All-Star, hands down. Same goes with Bagley. MBIII has generational talent written all over him. At 7 feet tall with unreal quickness and unbelievable shooting ability, Bagley and Fox could be a deadly duo for years to come.

So, there you have it. I mean this could be realistic and every Kings fan can breathe easy knowing the future is bright. Or it could be more of the same bleakness.
